Mr Christopher Gately

It is with a sense of deep sadness that I write to tell you of the untimely death of Christopher Gately, our former Curriculum Leader for History. Mr Gately died peacefully on Friday 1 May after a brave struggle against pancreatic cancer. He was aged 58. On behalf of the entire Cardinal Heenan community I have written to Mr Gately's widow, Kathryn, to express our condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

Prayers will be said in assemblies throughout the week for the repose of Mr Gately’s soul. It was his request that a memorial Mass be held here in school: it will take place later this term, on a date to be agreed. I will write to parents again when the details have been arranged. I know that large numbers of present and former pupils, parents, staff and governors will wish to attend.

Mr Gately taught history here for 25 years, from September 1980 until December 2005 when he moved on to a post as tutor at The University of Leeds. He was a gifted and dedicated teacher who inspired his pupils with a love of history. He believed passionately in developing pupils’ skills in critical thinking and the questioning of assumptions, however commonly held. His success in leading our history departmental team is attested by the excellent public examination results in history achieved by pupils year after year during his time here. Inspectors and advisors judged Mr Gately's lessons to be ‘outstanding’ on more than one occasion. He inspired many of our pupils to continue the study of history to A level and at university. He will be remembered with gratitude and affection by the thousands of pupils who were privileged to be educated by him. I know that he will be fondly remembered by current and former teaching colleagues, governors and parents.

Mr Gately’s funeral will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Langsett Road, Sheffield, on Monday 11 May at 11.00 am, followed by burial at St Michael’s Cemetery, Rivelin Valley Road, Sheffield, at approximately 12.15 pm. In the interests of our pupils, many of whom are now preparing for (and indeed already sitting) important public and internal examinations, the school will remain open as normal next Monday. The full curriculum will operate for all pupils. Some teachers will be attending the funeral on Monday, however, and pupils may find that some of their lessons will be taken by different members of staff that day. I hope that parents will understand the reasons for this.

Let our prayer come into your presence, Lord,
as we humbly ask for mercy:
and as in your love
you counted your servant Christopher among your people in this world,
so bring him now to the abode of peace and light,
and number him among your saints. Amen.
(From The Office for The Dead)

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name; you are mine.
(Isaiah 43:1)

I am now 48 years of age and have great memories of you teaching me over 30 years ago. I suspect that you, Peter Davies and Monica James are why i ended up at University. Also why I still love history. Rest in Peace.

Our hearts are forever linked, we are part one of the other
We bound our souls together and a journey we began
We faced the world as one as we travelled through this life
We chose our trail and then began walking hand in hand.

Now I continue the journey on the path we had chosen
And as I face our path alone and you travel on ahead
I know that you are also here to guide and guard my steps
To help me to keep true to the path where once you lead.

And though now there is only a single set of footprints
I do not fear for I know that I still travel on with you
I feel you as you continue to lead and guide my steps
As you continue leading me from just beyond my view.
